The always ready village in L. Turkana.
Happy new year 2021! It is by His grace we are partakers of this new year. I look forward to a year full of God’s surprises, lessons and growth for all of us. Karibu. Welcome to this first episode in this year. On 26th December 20, my family visited our brother Sammy in Kalokol which is at the shores of lake Turkana. It was an exciting adventure for both reunion and a moment to reflect my childhood memories. He shared with me a story about this village – Atirae which is both serene but similarly vibrant in fish business. You may see as if it is a devastated village but that is not the case. It is a source of great hope for our people in this region – praise be to God. This village and others around the lake share something in common – the houses are temporal because the water levels from the lake keep moving either inward or outward. Temporal houses both for business and living enable them to move with speed whenever the forces of nature from the lake require them to move. Closeness to the lake is crucial to their survival. Due to lucrative business opportunities, they don’t mind such inconveniences but have learnt to always be ready. I admire their perseverance and agility under such circumstances. In the new year, there are numerous uncertainties ahead of us. Though it is easy to despair, we are encouraged to always look to the one who holds our future. I am encouraged by the hymn with this chorus ‘Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow’. Some have gone ahead in faith and enthusiastically prepared for any eventualities in life by:- Making Smart goals to guide their aspirations
- Developed family budgets to guide their finances
- Saved some monies for emergencies
- Taken a course of study to improve in an area
- Committed to perform well in their current jobs
- Forgiven one another as God commands
- Become born again to be ready for eternity
- Taken medical insurance to protect their health
- Revive cold marriage relationships
- Etc. The list will never end.
